Confession and then a query:

Wow, guys. I did the Whole 30 elimination plan in September, and then the Whole30 reintroduction phase in October. Point being, I was without any sugar for 2 months. I mean, I did have organic fruit, but I steered away from all processed / refined sugar, even combing through ingredients. I was so energetic, balanced, happy, and healthy after a couple of weeks of that. It was greeeeaaaaat!

And then I had a sugar frenzy on Holloween! I had pie, candy, chocolate, and also chips and dip and fried chicken. All in one day, on Holloween. After 2 months without sugar, I had the biggest sugar high in the history of the world. It was epic how high I was on this drug. My demeanor was comparable to that of a crack addict. It was funny at first, especially while trick-or-treating. And then I wanted to go to sleep and could not!

Since then I've experienced the worst of physical symptoms. It's like the biggest tummy ache, combined with irrational emotions, depleted energy and focus, and a slew of physiological issues. It's safe to say that my body is definitely punishing me for bringing back the sugar and processed food. Lesson learned!!! Now, I don't want to have any sugar at all, but definitely at least for a couple of weeks. I don't want my body to get used to that drug again.

QUERY:
Have any of you experienced anything like this and decided to live without sugar and/or processed food? What does that look like for you? How do you make it sustainable?

melissatwa: Your story and your words of support are so very appreciated. Thank you thank you thank you. I completely agree that eliminating sugar completely is very challenging, and may not make one happy. I think things in moderation are okay, but seeing how refined sugar has impacted me so negatively really makes me not want to have it all. I would definitely still have natural, whole foods sweeteners like local honey, fruits, etc. But another snickers or a donut is probably not something I want to indulge in regularly. It's just not worth it! I feel so terrible. And yes, I am so with you about me needing to figure this out myself. Nobody should tell me what to do. They can offer friendly advice about what works and doesn't work for them, and that is always very welcome. Thank you again for everything you said, melissatwa. I'm excited about staying dedicated to finding my balance and WOE.

Barb's Counter: Yes, that is helpful. Thanks. I have done that in the past, where I incorporate sweet treats in moderation to stave off huge cravings. It definitely works for my body. But now that I reset my body and can fully analyze my negative reactions, I have some stress about eating sugar at all. I'm sure I'll figure it out. Thank you again!

Chestnut63: Besides seeing the folly diabetes and preventable diseases related to insulin response, I can also say that sugar is evil because of the torture it's been putting me under!! So, yes and yes.

shirfleur 1: I think so too. Sugar is going to illicit different reactions from every individual, I believe. And I think it's because we are all on our own journey to restoring our health, in whatever is best for us. Also, your WOE sounds like what I am trying to do right now: no unprocessed food, mostly whole foods and chemical-free choices, fruit, vegetables, and meat/poultry. I still need to figure out how often to eat healthy carbs. I'm thinking either: daily but only for dinner, or just a couple of times a week. I'll see which works out better for me. And if you want to experience that high, it's easy. Besides fruit, no sugar at all for a month, and then limited sugar through whole foods meals that have sugar, and then eat sugar throughout 1 day. It's seriously the best high, and I hope to never feel that again. Lol.

CelticPhoenix: I understand!!! I am not insulin resistant, but I did struggle with my A1C levels and being at the brink of diabetes for many years. I'm so glad to hear that you have figured out what works best for you. That is just wonderful news. And I had a similar reaction when I scoured the grocery store looking for food without added sugar in the ingredients, and finding that everything seems to have added sugar! It was so disappointing and frustrating, but also a great revelation to learn how to spot whole foods that don't have that crap. Also, I rally appreciate your tips on how to change your budget and grocery shopping habits to make sure that you get some natural sugar in your diet. Thank you!

wholefoodnut: that makes me feel like I'm not crazy. So this sugar crack high is thing?! My, my, my. I'm sorry to hear that you too are going through the torture of having eaten sugar this past week. Lesson learned, right! I hope I never forget this and how terrible I have felt for 3 days. Also, I am not at all feeling guilty. It was intentional and I wanted to learn from it. I have definitely gone back to eating healthy, and I have confidence that I'll be able to get the Sugar Dragon off of my back in a couple of days. Thank you for the reminders to treat myself with compassion. Love that.

CrashtestDawnie: I can totally see why you would go jogging on a sugar high. It's so intense, and after feeling that way I can see myself doing that as well! It is definitely a poison. I can see myself living without it for some time. Then, I would probably work it back in when I have been at goal and in maintenance for a while, along with alcohol. Much to ponder and decide. But the decision about the truth of sugar as a drug is clear.

CrashtestDawnie: Question! How many days after your vacay, and after returning to your way of eating, did you feel normal again?

Hi liv001: Do you have any tips on what sugars you avoid? It seems to be added to most foods in the market. Do you comb through ingredients to avoid sugar? Or are there certain sugars that you avoid? I'd love to learn from you.

Diea, Bob's Red Mill makes a gluten-free flour that you can use in any ordinary bread recipe. Good luck on your journey. 🌈🌈🌈

Diea... I low carb so I avoid most kind of sugar and focus my diet around proteins. I probably eat two meals a day. First meal is commonly either based around protein powder, a dairy, and/or nuts plus veggies or berries, the other something around meat, chicken or fish plus veggies and berries. I do not know Whole 30 very well but I think what you do is quite different. I do eat quite a bit of whole food but for the rest yes I read labels carefully and avoid anything with too many carbs and too many chemicals. Love to hear what you will do.

Diea, I simply cook and avoid processed foods!! Most of the additives are asthma and migraine triggers for me. Whole natural foods are my go to.

@Diea, I've dieted since 1999. They used to believe you needed to eat "clean" to get into shape. I got into decent shape but would always yo-yo eventually. Now that I know it comes down to CICO, and sugar is NOT the devil, I have gotten into and maintained my best shape ever. Flexible dieting is key and you can see it on here with most of the successful dieters. The ones who maintain while eating "clean" were never very obese to begin with or were never obese at all. We're wired differently.

Thanks for the tip on buying gluten free flour, shirfleur 1!

Congratulations on your successes and all of your learning, Diablo360x. Thank you for sharing! I'll think about what you said about flexibility, but refined sugar really is not good for my particular body. I learned my lesson and need to decrease my intake of refined either mostly or completely. I have such a terrible reaction to it.

The way I see it, you can't have too much of it if you're in a deficit, you can't have too much of it if you're trying to get enough protein to be optimal on body composition goals, and you can't have too much of it if you're trying to get in a good amount of nutrients. In other words, I don't see a reason to stress over sugar. Especially from fruit. There are no bad foods, just bad diets. If you're comprising your calories from 50% plus processed high fat high sugar foods, you most likely have a bad diet. Moderation of foods you love, complete elimination leads to failure eventually in my opinion.

Diea almost a week! The first day is no biggie, then the next 3 days I’m tired, cranky and compulsively think about carbs and then over the next couple of days, energy levels and mood start to stabilize.
05 nov 19 door lid: CrashtestDawnie
CrashtestDawnie: omg, that sounds a lot like what I went through when I first eliminated carbs and sugar for Whole30, but my energy and mood rollercoaster definitely lasted longer. I think it was in week 3 that I finally stabilized. This time, I think I came back to normal from the sugar frenzy after 4 full days. Isn't that just amazing what sugar does to your and my body! Best of luck to you and your WOE.
