I've had a pretty good week! Less hiking than usual because of heavy smoke from wildfires. But I love getting out when the wind changes and blows the smoke out of our valley! The photos are views of the Cascade Mountains, taken from the patio at Pine Martin on Mount Bachelor (in central Oregon). I took the ski lift up for a birthday celebration, but really enjoyed the opportunity to hike at the top. My friend who was celebrating his birthday volunteers giving geology talks on the mountain, and he shared his information with us in an impromptu mountaintop educational talk. Very fun!

I'm successfully (so far) breaking a craving for sweets. I overindulged a couple of times early last week. It makes me feel sluggish and slow to eat sugar and empty carbs. I've made a commitment to myself to try some new strategies, including walking before snacking, and always choosing healthier snacks. Very glad to be back on track. Cravings and past ingrained bad habits can blindside us! The trick is to stop the bad habit and move on.

Beautiful views! If I may suggest, find really good reasons to beat the sweets. Write them out and review daily, multiple times a day. The habit urges won't likely go away just because we feel exasperated at certain moments, so we have to say no even when we want to say yes. There is a lot of power in that! I think you know I had some testing done and found that my body's ability to process glucose has decreased. It's been so eye-opening, though it's been tough to face because it's not just sugar, which I had already pretty much defeated. Being a little frightened helps, and I think it's warranted. More in my journal.

Beautiful pics! I donā€™t know if this would help but I did a 40 day sugar fast in the spring and it decreased by sugar cravings. Oh I still have cravings once in a while but the fast sure seemed to help. After the fast I did not jump right into sugar again but slowly allowed some back in. During the fast I did eat fruit and had raisins in my oatmeal but cut out all the processed stuff.

Great plan, Alison. I'm eating very erratically right now, using up things in the fridge so they don't go bad... things that I buy for Peter and don't particularly like myself... but frugal person that I am, I'm eating them. I've gained 1 lb., which is probably night-time eating as I'm sleeping poorly. If Peter is transferred to St. John's Rehab Hospital this week as hoped, I will be doing the long (1 to 1 1/2 hour) drives each way again, and will rely more on frozen foods and take-out salads. I've made 2 big macaroni & cheese casseroles with added tomatoes and spinach, and added canned salmon to one as well. Cooked them, divided into serving sizes and froze for meals when I don't feel like cooking. Looking at the St. John's website, it looks as if they have a 3-week basic programme then add on extra weeks as required by the specific patient. St. John's is affiliated with Sunnybrook and the Department of Medicine, University of Toronto, and is absolutely the right place for Peter's rehab. I'm grateful that they have accepted him based on the medical information sent to them. Peter's accident was 3 weeks ago today, and he is up walking in the halls at least twice each day for 30 minutes or so. I'm glad that he has had the past 8 days at the little Uxbridge Hospital, because it is quiet and he has been able to rest more. Physiotherapists there are excellent, but not equipped to get him back to where he wants to be. I hope that the fires in your area will be under control so that you can get out more. I really like what you've written about cravings and bad habits... it's so easy to give in to them. Take care, Hugs, Gail

I visited a town called Concrete in Washington a few years ago. The Cascades were magical. Is it the same range?
