I made some prescient comments in my journal the other day as I work on getting healthier. I've been neglecting stand-up comedy, but I pointed out that I've known people who would have been better served by working on their health rather than comedy. I'm no exception. The death of Robin Williams drives that home.

Body fat: 26.6 (somewhat dehydrated). This is as low as I have gone. Optimum for a man according to the AARP BMI calculator is 13-17.

Eight solid hours of sleep - no wide awake episodes, with dreaming. Eight minutes on the Air Walk Trainer first thing to burn off glycogen. The Fat Gripz arrived. I was able to put them on the Air Walk Trainer fairly easily. It does feel that my forearms are more engaged. I tried fitting them on the rowing machine handles, but the foam handles were too large for an easy fit. I could see where the Fat Gripz could be a replacement if the foam handles ever wore out.

I was able to use them with wrist curls because the Fat Gripz fits quite easily and nicely on the Reebok hexagonal. They're tougher to get on the generic plate dumbell handles. However, they're too long for the C9 by Champion dumbbells. I was thinking about getting some lighter dumbbells, but I can't see replacing the C9s right now with the Reebok dumbbells or more generic plate versions, but I might eventually if the Fat Gripz are worth using across all weights. I could see putting one on the ThunderBell since the handle isn't that comfortable (strips of vinyl that don't entirely cover the metal), but it doesn't look like it will fit.

The replacement Misfit Shine also arrived, but it doesn't sync with any of the Android devices I have so I will put it aside until I upgrade to an Android device that does, possibly the Asus Memo Pad. The other one is still in UPS limbo. I wonder if it got nicked. The hernia belt was delivered and I put it on. Pressure is firm but not uncomfortable. After a while, I stopped noticing it. I hope it helps. I have an alternative on the way, should get here tomorrow. I'm a great believer in backups. Fortunately, I don't have to wear it while lying down since it recedes (the medical term is reducible).

Today is an up day (eat all I want on the Alternate-Day Diet). Pizza today because the Alternate-Day diet book says monotony is good. Tomorrow is a down day, but it's also the day my Amazon PrimePantry box arrives. Fortunately, most of the content is diet-related so I won't be exposed to the temptations I encounter at Kroger. I'm out of sugar, but I've got a lot of Nectresse monk fruit packets. I'd like to add Domino Light to the next PrimePantry, but they don't carry it. It would have to be a separate order. Nectresse is supposed to be 150 times sweeter than sugar. They're not kidding. Used two packets in my chai and it was almost too much, even for a sweetaholic like me.

I made another Mama Mary pizza with Hunt's diced tomatoes and Kroger pizza cheese after reading about the virtues of monotony in "The Alternate-Day Diet". Some of the pizza cheese had congealed so I had to grate it again, which kinda defeats the purpose. I wasn't in the mood to do it so I wound up scattering several chunks on the pizza. It worked out OK because they melted. I may just buy a Mozzarella block and shred it myself if it's going to do that. Don't know how much money I would save. I bought a Pizzaz Plus for $25 at Kroger and have really gotten a lot of use out of it - mostly for pizzas, fish sticks, and grilled cheese sandwiches. It was almost a necessity to buy one. It's cooler than my gas oven and the gas oven sets off the smoke detectors. I have to open the kitchen door to let the smoke which is a pain in the butt when it's 32 degrees outside.

Fourteen minutes of stretching in bed. Strength training: 15 minutes of cleaning up, doing leg exercises with the ankle weight on the mat and chair that I didn't get to yesterday. I think my legs are getting stronger, but I don't have any metrics for that. It's just a feeling. Forty-five minutes of the third month of the whole body conditioning dumbbell program. Cardio: 45 minutes of the Air Walk Trainer, 734 steps.

Ran into my 20-article limit on the online version of The Richmond Times-Dispatch, which reminded me that I've been paying $2 a week to buy the Thursday and Sunday editions of They York Times. I decided to take The Times on their offer of $5 for 12 weeks of the electronic version, which would save me $19 in three months. They raise the rate to $8.75 a week after three months, but I will just cancel, which is what my aunt does with the paper version.

I just wanted to make a brief comment. You tend to use "body mass" and "body fat" interchangeably. They are not the same thing. In no way are you 26% body fat. Your BMI is 26.6 but you are not 26.6 body fat. 26.6% body fat is like the Stay Puft Marshmallow man or the Michelin guy. This is based on the info at this web page.... http://www.livestrong.com/article/77106-bmi-vs.-body-fat-percentage/

Chris, your gas oven should not smoke. They only smoke if there is stuff spilled in the bottom (needs cleaning) or if you burn something. The other time is if you have a self cleaning one it will smoke when you run the cleaning cycle. When I replaced my microwave I bought one that's also convection oven, I love it. Since it's just me the smaller oven works great for many things and doesn't heat up the house during the summer. Sad about Robin Williams, he had such an amazing talent. Don't forget to do what you love. I also need to make time for my other passions besides my yard.

What Robin William's suicide also teaches us is that being happy is not related to being intelligent, successful, financially secure, good looking or wealthy. It is about loving life and yourself in it.

Not sure where you're getting my use of the words "body mass", Eddie. I don't use body mass in my entries. I don't even know what know it is. As for body fat, those are readings from my Omron monitor. Can't speak to the Livestrong link, since FatSecret cuts those off in the comments. I do admit to misspeaking when I called subcutaneous fat visceral fat.

AilaOne, "The How of Happiness" makes the same points.

wholefoodnut, I should have been more careful in my phrasing. The oven doesn't smoke. It's just that just baking a pizza is enough to set off the alarm because it's rather sensitive. Hope you'll forgive me for sticking with the $25 Pizzaz Plus instead of a $200 Cuisinart microwave and convection oven.

That's a reference to the AARP recommendations for body fat on their BMI calculating page - two separate things.

You are only 150 pounds. Unless you are 3'7", no way are you 26% body fat. I am 5'7" and weigh 243 and I am about 17%. I suggest you find a Bod Pod location in your area and get tested. Bod Pod has a <2% accuracy level.

I had never heard of and have looked up The How of Happiness, read the comments in Amazon, looks like a great book :-)

So glad the Misfit finally showed up. I'm with you in that the original is probably living somewhere else now. Thinking of your purchases - have you received your kitchen scale yet? As I was making my morning smoothie and weighing everything out it made me think of it.

Vickie, UPS says, "Scheduled delivery information is not available at this time" after more than a week. I guess if stuff gets sold off the back of a truck, it can "fall" off the back of a truck as well. It's the first time it's happened to me, but I don't normally get that many packages. The scale did arrive. I'm thinking about making a tuna and white bean salad tomorrow, so I may use it then.

Nothing to forgive. Grins. I think I bought one if those for a gift exchange a couple years go, it was a pizza something. My microwave is over my stove, my old one's door fell apart, the plastic disintegrated. Found a super deal on one clearance @ home depot otherwise it would have been just a microwave.

Eddie, Healthy Years, a newsletter from the UCLA Division of Geriatrics, points out, "...BMI does not differentiate lean from fat weight so that visceral fat in the abdomen can be missed. In a 2007 study, researchers measured abdominal fat via MRI and found that 45 percent of women and 60 percent of men with normal waist size and normal weight according to their height/weight ratio had excess abdominal fat. 'I coined the term 'sarcopenic density' for this condition in 1993. This is now recognized as a predictive risk factor in breast cancer,' says Dr. Heber. 'If you have sarcopenic obesity, you need to both do weightlifting or other resistance training to build muscle while also trying to lose excess fat by eating a healthy diet with adequate protein to maintain your muscle and and control your appetite.'" My guess is that I'm battling sarcopenic obesity. According to the AARP, "For men, the recommended amount of body fat is between 13 percent and 17 percent. (The average American man has approximately 17 percent to 19 percent body fat.)" By the AARP's guidelines, you're doing fine. Just goes to show all these charts are suggestions. Your mileage may vary I don't know how you're measuring body fat and how accurate that is. Bioelectrical impedance analysis such as the Omron isn't that reliable. It can be skewed by factors such as hydration. When I hold the monitor with arms outstretched (the correct way) I get a reading 10 points higher than holding it closer to the body. However, as Tim Ferris says, poor measurement is better than no measurement at all. It's not something I need, but it keeps me amused. I rely more on visuals, i.e., subcutaneous fat AKA bowl of jelly, love handles, etc. The local Crossfit gym has a Bod Pod, which apparently is the gold standard. Before I spend $50 for a session, I will probably get an EatSmart scale for the same price. We'll see what it says my body fat is. At least I get to keep the scale. I like the Tanita scale, which draglist uses, which gives you metabolic age as well as body fat, but for a $100 more I can live without it. I may get one later.

Chris, one house I lived in I had to disconnect the smoke alarm to even make coffee!

Okay that piece you quoted says the average man has 13 -17% body fat. You said this morning that you have 26%. My point is, I'd bet you a dozen pluots that at your height and weight you are about 15%. Not 26. And all of those scales estimate body fat. They work on timing of how long a small amount of current takes to traverse through your body and do math against the weight. The only reliable way to test it is to go to a place that does that. When they finally schedule me it will cost me $25. Do some research on the Bod Pod. It will read your body fat percentage to under 2% accuracy. The hydrostatic, which was the standard for years, was accurate to about 5%. It's fascinating reading if nothing else. And I can tell you are a gatherer of knowledge like I am. I would go get a Bod Pod done just to see the science of it at work.

You have a fairly major college near you? I have no idea where you are. They are usually cheaper as students run the test as a part of classroom training.
13 aug 14 door lid: eddie1261
Chris, gotta say you nailed that one. I would much rather spend my money on something I can use long term than on something that is fleeting. You will reach your goals because you are committed to achieving results.

Oops, I meant to sarcopenic obesity, not sarcopenic density in that quote from the UCLA newsletter.
