Six hours of solid sleep with dreams. Lower temperatures and humidity today. I can almost feel Fall coming on. Two more weeks of August - wahoo! Half hour nap after back tension returned. I've been slacking back on my guided meditations lately.

I adjusted the hernia belt fitting for more comfort on my second day of wearing it. It wasn't digging in as much. However, the flat panel belt arrived and I switched to that. The Hernia Bible advises against belts with rounded pads: "The inward bulging of the truss can scar the edges of the hernia and prevent them from coming together. This makes it difficult for the hernia to heal itself, and it can also become enlarged." Turns out the flat panel belt is also more comfortable: less binding, fewer rough edges. I think I will eventually go for the Cadillac of flat panels, made in the UK. It looks as if it would be more comfortable. Unfortunately, it's a lot more expensive than the ones available on Amazon and you have to order it from England.

The Amazon PrimePantry shipment arrived, delivered up the steps by UPS. Everything arrived none the worse for wear except for a carton of peaches that broke open, but the individual packages weren't damaged. Beats having to hump all that stuff up the stairs myself all the way from Kroger, although that may be healthier. Alas, so many unhealthy temptations at Kroger that it may cancel out.

Body fat: 24.8 (dehydrated). Today is a down day (500 calories).

Spent about 45 minutes leafing through free newsletters and promotional materials for a variety of health newsletters. I decided to get them all, just one per month, so I don't get hit with a bunch of subscription bills. Some of the newsletters are on overlapping topics, but I figure it doesn't hurt to get a second opinion.

I'm cutting back the pizza until I can make pizza sauce myself from scratch or find a low-sodium version. The Hunt's canned diced tomatoes are pushing my sodium levels too high. So are the Rotel Diced Tomatoes & Green Chilies I've been making omelets with. I'm never buying those again. I got one of those ten cans for a dollar each deals. Blanking blank Kroger for stocking them. I'm going through my cupboard and move all the high-sodium tomato cans to a much less accessible cupboard as a reminder to stay away. I'm going back to cooking my own beans instead of using canned once it gets cooler. I'm going to lay off the Planter's Heart-Healthy nuts and start eating unsalted peanuts. I'm dumping the salt packets I've accumulated from the bistro meals. I've been kidding myself that a little salt on unsalted nuts or popcorn can't hurt. It's good that I've cut back on bistro meals at Kroger since those are heavily salted, judging from the taste.

I'm making progress on the losing weight front, but I can't kid myself that's enough. I want to eat better: more whole foods, less processed foods, and sugar. Too much bar food at open mics didn't help.

I want to start reading that DASH cookbook I have on the Kindle. I ate a whole pizza on Sunday and my RDI didn't hit 1,000, but my sodium hit 2,455, which is 1,000 more than it should. In general, I want to settle on five recipes that I can make from scratch I can eat that are low in sodium, and stick to those, as per the recommendation of "The Alternate-Day Diet." The DASH diet says that sugar plays a role in the accumulation of abdominal fat, which is one of my targets.

Good for you on cooking more meals at home with less fat and sodium! If you make a large pot of soup with no salt, you could add one can of Diced Tomatoes & Green Chilies and the salt should be low per serving. Just a thought. I want to make soup and keep it in the fridge, then freeze portions in pint size freezer bags.

For your pizza sauce, maybe consider Pomi Tetrapak tomatoes. They may even be available on your Amazon Prime Pantry. There are a variety of pizza and marinara sauce recipes available on the web using these. They have a remarkable flavor, low in sodium and (I think) no added sugar. You can fiddle around with herbs and spices until you hit the blend that tastes right to you. I also like making the sauce this way since you have the option of leaving it a bit chunky. I always like to throw a couple dashes of balsamic vinegar into my sauce ;-) You get the sweetness from the vinegar and the acid really seems to magnify the flavor of the tomato.

I agree w/the free shipping... while the 'self walking and shopping' lends some activity, it also lends itself to temptations, frustrations, etc. Use that free time to go walk somewhere pleasant without the screaming babies, people bumping you with carts and temptations from the bakery aisle. Wait.. that's my philosophy... you figure out your own :0)

Good for you! Wonderful that you are watching your sodium and sugar so closely. I looked up that delivery service. Can't get it in my area. Sigh. I make my own tomato sauce from tomato paste when I can't get whole tomatoes. Add some water to desired consistency, throw in some onion, garlic and spices (oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, pepper). No added salt or sugar. I use Ms Dash if I absolutely need to. Costs a lot less than brand sauces.

Thanks for the tip, kattay. I added it to Evernote. As it happens, Prime Pantry carries tomato paste, including organic and gourmet. Sorry you can't get the service. My delivery from Prime Pantry came from Ohio, which doesn't make any particular sense to me since they have two warehouses the size of a zillion football fields right outside of town.

Thanks for the info, Deb_N. I don't want to throw out the high-sodium cans I have left so that works for me. On my to-do list is to get some freezer containers so that I can organize my freezer better. Now it's bags of produce and fruit stacked willy-nilly.

Chris, if you think you won't eat the high-sodium can goods or they might expire because you put them away, you could donate them to neighbors. If you have anything to give away at freecycle, just ask the person who comes if they would like to take those, too.

Vickie, you were right on the money! Amazon sells individual Pomi Tetrapacks in Prime Pantry. I added one to my next box. They also sell them elsewhere by the dozen in the event I want to go full-Costco.

My freezer has 4 shelves and I put all the veggies together in the easiest to reach shelf. The meat goes on the bottom shelf because I don't reach for that very often, watching my cholesterol. Fruits on the other shelf. The icecream, orange juice and waffles, etc. go on the top shelf where I can't reach it!

Huzzah on the Pomi's! I hope they have the flavor you're looking for. Loving the "full-Costco" comment. Thanks everyone too for the discussion of what happens with the stuff we just don't eat often anymore. I need to go thru some of the stuff on the pantry shelf and get it to the Food Bank. I have a bad habit of hanging on to stuff "just in case".

Deb_N, sadly, my freezer is just one big compartment which compounds the jumbling. I may try a tip from Lifehacker and add some wire racks or stackable shelves. I would feel vaguely guilty about passing on high-sodium products to other so I will probably try your adulterating them.

Chris, you scare me sometimes. I see my thoughts with your icon next to them. I have half a costco-sized box of splenda. It's taking up room and I know we'll never use it. At the same token after what I've read over the recent months, I don't feel like I can give it to anyone. Le sigh. For the tomato products, I really like the idea of adulterating them. Great idea!
