My wife sent me this article this morning. I think it's very informative, useful, and encouraging.

To me this was the most important take away:

"The people who have had success in losing weight have a few things in common: They weigh themselves at least once a week. They exercise regularly at varying degrees of intensity, with the most common exercise being walking. They restrict their calorie intake, stay away from high-fat foods, and watch their portion sizes. They also tend to eat breakfast.

But there's a ton of diversity as to what makes up their meals. (So there is no "best" diet or fad diet that did the trick.) And they count calories."

The thing about the biggest loser thing is resting metabolic rate, so they’re extremely obese people that lost significant amount of weight. 1lb of fat burns average of 2 cals a day and 1lb of muscle about 6. They lost hundreds. A 200lbs loss from fat alone will decrease 400cals a day and 100lbs of muscle will decrease 600 cals a day. So it’s true to that point. And most weight loss, people only care about the number going down when they should be worrying about what they are losing instead. You want fat loss not weight loss. My opinion

Superman, the article addresses that and explains that the loss of muscle mass doesn't fully explain the loss in resting metabolic rate though. Rapid fat loss is accompanied by decreased RMR that a gradual fat loss is not accompanied by, (muscle loss taken into account.)
