Y002's Logboek, 01 jul 15

So, I started on the 5:2 today. The (my) plan is to eat 500 calories twice a week (600 calories for men) and the rest of the week 2000 calories per day. Your 'non-fast day' calorie limit will differ from mine, so if you're keen to follow this diet, see the link: http://thefastdiet.co.uk

My 'fast days' will vary according to my calendar and what I have planned for my week. I'm still deciding whether I will log my non-fasting days on fatsecret as I pretty much have an idea (from previous calorie counting stints) of how much I need to consume to stick to the 2000 calorie mark. I have a super-fit athletic partner who pretty much eats what he enjoys, so during the day on non-fasting days I'll eat Future Life for breakfast, something 'reasonable' for lunch and will then save most of my calories to enjoy over a super-nice dinner. I enjoy cooking, so least I won't have to give that up and can also enjoy nights out and a couple of glasses of wine. I know it's not ideal to eat one's biggest meal at night, but this is why I'm going with 5:2, it suits my lifestyle.

On 'fast days' I'll definitely be logging those and checking in here. I'm hoping to only weight myself once a week (and not every day as I tend to do when I'm on a 'diet'!).

For the record, I am a vegetarian, but love carbohydrates. Unwilling to give them up for the sake of the latest low-carb-high-protein/fat-fad. (Works for some people, so shouldn't be too harsh about that here, although I think a balance and clean eating is better than too much protein, especially all that animal protein and fat. Ewe.)

So, today is my first 'fast day'. I might go slightly over 500 calories as it wasn't a planned fast day, it sort of became one as the day bumbled along and I found myself at midday with no food onboard just yet - plenty coffee though. (*blames baby* - yip, mostly here to get rid of 'baby fat')

Breaking news. My partner just got home and announced that we're going out for dinner with friends. Shucks. Soup for me it is then. Urgh. I hate going out to dinner and nibbling on a salad or sipping on a low cal soup and having no wine or whisky! So not me, but I refuse to break today's 'fast' as it is going pretty well. Definitely going over 500 cals then, but a good start nevertheless.

Please feel free to join me on my journey!

xx

Yoo2 it's funny there are people who think low carbing is just about loads of protein and fat. Most low carbers I know also eat a ton of low carb veggies... with limited amounts of healthy protein and healthy fats. The first low-carbohydrate diet book was written in 1863 by William Banting as a service to his fellow man. Banting is here to stay :) If you go on to the Tim Noakes Banting Page on Face Book it has 75 430 members and as you scroll through the pages there are plenty of before and after pics i.e. success stories for Africa. I'm glad I found it because it helped me to get rid of 17 kilograms when nothing else worked. Different things work for different people :) #eachtotheirown

I think banting is great for people who need to loose a lot of weight. I however see it as a short (ish) term approach though (to get rid of excess weight reasonably quickly) and not a way of life. If I was not a vegetarian, I would have supported paleo more than banting, but that's just a preference and not a judgement call. I'm not anti-banting, I'm anti the people who totally ignore the true diet (like you said, tons of low carb veg) and just go 'balls to the wall' on animal protein and lard. I lived with someone who would literally just eat steak and butter and full fat cream. This is what I think is utterly unhealthy. On another note, well done on your loss. That is excellent going. We're all here to support one another, whatever our ways of getting there (as long as it's healthy obviously). :)

I lost the weight extremely slowly and this is my lifestyle for keeps. I love eating like this. I'm not going back to a life of empty and in my case inflammation causing carbs. There's a lot of myths surrounding LCHF as it is scientific and not everybody "gets it" Thanks for the heads up. I wish you the best in your journey as you give yourself the best gift ever. The gift of health (and happiness )Have a great week!

It really is what suits ones lifestyle and importantly ones genetic make-up and like you say, being healthy and happy! I absolutely agree. I'm an overeater and my preference is to eat across the food groups, but to learn to do this in moderation. (Genetic make-up as in 5:2 is not recommended for diabetics and too low carb intake is not recommended for those with a predisposition for depression, just as examples.)

Not true...low carb is brilliant for depression sufferers. There is an adjustment initially as your serotonin drops and your body goes from using glucose, to using stored fat for energy but after that you feel freaking amazing (and very energetic as the inflammation starts to leave your body). Most processed carbs are not natural foods and causes a host of inflammation for so many people resulting in ugly weight gain. Many depression sufferers are in fact just carb and sugar addicted resulting in unstable blood sugar levels = mood swings. Ultimately different things work for different people. If you go to Google and type in the "anti depression diet" and Dr Mercola you will find a ton of information. There has also been a lot of evidence that gluten found in products containing wheat are a trigger and that sugar (which is a carb) should be removed. For more wheat info Google Dr Davis The Wheat Belly Diet. Anyway if you do the research you will get more info.

There are so many schools of thought and opposing research results. I've sifted through what I could find and selected an eating plan that suits me and that I think I can maintain. You've done the same for you with great results! Let's just continue to support one another. Got to run, about to tuck into a chelsea bun. Sorry, I'm trying to make light of this discussion. :)
