Since I am thin and fit and have been that way for decades guess I will keep doing what I am doing. High fat diets kill. We all make choices. Heart disease gets most of us. Good luck.

High Fat diets do not kill - poor choices and a sedentary life can kill. Dietary fat comes in may forms - it depends from where the fat comes, too.

I agree, HCB. Big difference between getting fats from avocado, nuts, and so on, instead of fried snack foods and things like ice cream. If I'd continued the way I WAS eating, which was to try every kind of diet plan that sounded healthy--including low at ones--I'd be living a much shorter life, because my weight continued to rise. Eating low carb and increasing healthy fats has made a huge difference, and I believe it's only going to continue to make me healthier and happier.

Diets high in processed and refined carbohydrates are what make people fat and kill. Have you ever seen a fat tiger? What do they feed cattle, hogs, and other livestock to fatten them up for slaughter?

Wow, what an interesting thread. I have learned a lot more, thanks for all of you who DO know what you're talking about. I just know that cutting carbs and adding some more healthy fats is working for me as no other plan ever has, and that I am NOT craving the carbs any more which seems pretty darn amazing to me. And....it's great for those who choose to eat lowfat vegan or whatever, if that works for you, but it DOES NOT mean it would work for everyone. With that in mind, I've chosen to read and educate myself as much as possible so I know I'm making the best choices for my body and my health. Diabetes is rampant in my family and I am doing everything I can to hold it off as long as possible; losing weight is the best way I can make that happen (or not happen, however you want to say it.)

Correct, carbs are the enemy and the root of obesity, diabetes, cancer, and cardiovascular disease and death Elizabeth. Meat, poultry, and fish are healthy in small portions. Concentrate of green and green leafy vegetables. Limit your portions of rice, pasta, and bread to 20-35 grams total per meal. Drink lots of water and exercise. Healthy fats from nuts, seeds, and avocados are good in small portions if you want to lose weight. Avoid all processed foods, fast foods, food with added sugar, fruit juices (eat the fruit instead, and table sugar.

Stephen, I had sauteed cod and fresh Brussels sprouts for my dinner, followed by an apple. If I want/need a snack later, it'll be a small measure of nuts. Since beginning this new regime I have eaten potatoes exactly twice, and rice not at all, and bread just twice too. And I love that I'm not craving them! I am by myself for lunch most days so I often eat a couple of poached eggs and a big plate of green vegetables, and I assure you I savor every bite :) I also plan and prep a lot in advance: right now I've got carrot, celery, cucumber and zucchini sticks freshly washed and cut in my fridge, with homemade dressing to dip them in. The nuts are all measured out into proper portions (yes I actually counted out 22 almonds, over and over) and stored in snack bags so I can just grab when I need. I usually have boiled eggs and some kind of lean meat (which I roast myself) sliced thin in the fridge also...the more I do things like this the easier it is to eat properly. Right? Because, you know, I do get that this isn't a diet, but a new way of eating for the rest of my life.

I absolutely agree with Stephen in regards to green leafy vegetables, there should be another category of macro nutrients for them instead of being shoved under the carbohydrate umbrella. I don't agree with the 20-35 grams of carbohydrates per meal, though, unless weight loss isn't the goal, and even then that would be relative to how much weight any given person is looking to lose. Just looking at your diet calendar, Stephen, I see where just a few minor adjustments would put you in ketosis and really expedite your weight loss, but that might not be of interest to you and you'll get where you want to be on your current plan, though it will take longer. I definitely share your attitude about processed food, that stuff isn't good for anyone, if you can't pronounce the ingredients you definitely shouldn't eat it. I completely avoid fruit, I don't really like it and fructose is one of the worst kinds of sugar a human can eat. I pretty much ignore Dianne Gardner, she's obviously got moral objections to eating animals, which I can respect, but I don't respect the blatant dissemination of false information in regards to the health aspects of a high fat diet.

The great thing is that everybody is motivated to improve their health, eat better, and lose some weight in the process. I thank everybody for their input and am excited that we are all on a similar journey to better ourselves.
