According to Jim Stoppani, Ph.D, doctor of exercise physiology, you should eat gummy bears immediately after your workout. ā€œFast-digesting carbs hit your blood stream quicker, causing insulin to spike. Fast-digesting carbs are ideal after a workout." what is everyone's thought on this?
He says the main reason to consume carbs post-workout is to replenish the muscle glycogen that you burned during your workout. He says as you train, your main fuel source is muscle glycogen. Glycogen is the storage form of glucose. It is composed of long strings of glucose molecules with numerous branches. The glucose break from the glycogen chain as needed in order to generate ATP, which transports chemical energy and is crucial for muscle contractions. He says research confirms that the best way to replenish muscle glycogen stores after workouts is to consume high-glycemic (fast-digesting) carbs as soon as possible.Fully replenishing your muscle glycogen levels as quickly as possible after workouts is important for growth. Stored glycogen in muscle cells pulls water into those cells. This increases the muscle cell volume and therefore muscle fiber fullness.
Where are my gurus?? If I do low carb and then eat a handful of gummies wont that slow my loss? He says nothing about losing weight only building muscle.. I just want everyone's opinion so I can make a educated decision.. Also Im worried gummies would be a "gateway" food and open the door to more cheating..

@warrenwinter- I agree sugar is bad- bad specially when its processed and stripped of all the nutrients (white sugar-corn syrup etc) Doing my whole 30- I had to eliminate ALL ADDED SUGAR- the only sugar I could get was from dates and natural fruits. Even then- the whole 30 program does not want you to just drink juice even if it is from freshly squeezed fruits. Because even too much of the good sugar can still not be good. I believe sugar is meant to be kept to a minimum. But also- I think depending on how athletic one is- they can get away with adding some sort of sugar in their diet. My argument is why eat gummie bears when you can have fruit or honey?

My trainer advised me to drink chocolate milk after my weight training. Added benefit was it was a treat to satisfy my desire to have chocolate. Mahjong, your thoughts please? Thnx.

I know I just bought honey, but it is all bad. Why I came to FS. My doctor saw blood sugar moving up, and told me, lose weight or worry about diabetes.

If you have access to Raw unprocessed Honey then great, however, Honey as most people know it is overly processed into something that barely resembles honey. And really...Sugar is NOT bad, the abuse of Sugar is bad, and you can make Sugar work for you, or against you. I think far too many times, people that are looking to lose weight assume that to be 'healthy' you have to be perfect, and it is the single biggest reason people fail on their diets. They try to be absolutely perfect with the assumption that anyone who is healthy eats perfectly. You have a wide latitude to work with. If you overweight/obese and looking to lose a lot of weight, clearly you have abused sugars and foods for years, and in looking to reverse that, sure...be as perfect as you can, however, do not make the mistake and assume you need to be that way forever, or that candy or french fries here and there will destroy your gut microbes and instantly lead to cardiovascular disease.

You are correct, as usual, but as you get older, sugar becomes enemy # 1, I believe. I really didn't understand for most of my life, that sugar really is the weight benefactor.

I think this strategy is geared more for weightlifters looking to improve performance. Figuring the optimal amount might be tricky, would be based on body weight and workout type. Not sure this is good for fat burning cardio workouts. Of course, with the nutrition plan I pay for, I have been drinking protein and coconut water shake during my Crossfit workouts. Before then it was protein shake and a few twizzlers. I know others who do cookies or cereal, basically anything quick digesting and low fat. Gummy bears or jelly beans could work, I've seen people eat watermelon and blueberries in a workout too. I like the coconut water because it's easy on my stomach and mixes well with whey. I don't add anything for general cardio, such as XC ski, running, or biking. The exception would be if it is more of an endurance activity, such as an all day backcountry tour or 40+ mile bike ride.

A small baked sweet potato (generally 5-8 ounces) would be healthier. I lift weights and always have them ready to eat right after my workout, with protein, of course.

@ktexp2: weight lifting is a better fat burner than cardio, steady state or hiit. Coconut water is great, it's the original gatorade.

Redgirl, thanks for acknowledging my share. Frosty is correct, being in ketosis does reduce total amount of free radicals. For this reason, I always recommend antioxidant rich food choices (and supplements if need be) for those on a more regular diet. I wasn't aware that you were following a ketogenic diet plan (I suppose that's what you meant by low carb?). So to you and Frosty, I encourage your efforts. I believe ketogenic diets are very effective and can produce great results (I sort of view it as hacking your metabolism, aka biohacking). However, some food for thought though: while regular diets do produce more free radicals, our bodies are primed to work this way, so at some point when you resume a more regular dietary intake, you'll be back to this. Likewise, your body is not meant to continue in ketosis for extended periods of time. While increased free radicals sound bad, ketogenic diets increase the amount of acids and ammonia-containing waste, and produce ACETONE (nail-polish remover) in your blood stream. Can you imagine what acetone does inside your body? Your joints, bones, and kidneys (among other organs) are now being compromised by this. Your joints will wear out (hello knee pain), your bones may thin out (over a longer period of time of course, so you'd be more likely to develop osteoporosis) and your kidney function way go out of whack. Oh, and you're also more likely to develop kidney stones or gall stones (very painful) thanks to the increased amount of acids. Ever known somebody who dropped weight in a short period of time and they had stones? Just about every other person I've known with a gastric bypass has had a cholescystectomy (gallbladder removal surgery). Please be careful and take care of yourselves; plan on ketosis being a bout. As a general rule of thumb (depending on how much weight you have to lose) I would recommend aiming between 6-12 weeks MAX, then doing a washout period with reintroduction of moderate carbohydrate intake for ~4 weeks, then resuming. You'll be doing your body a favor in the long run. Here is one article (among many others) from the New York Academy of Sciences published in 2005 that confirms this: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16037240 Please read this friendly and helpful forum post from bodybuilding.com: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=131404663 TLDR; ketogenic diets also have negatives; practice them in bouts, not long-term

Okay, I'm learning! What I'm seeing is that sugar may be useful to body builders after a really heavy workout. For most people it is bad, yes?
17 mrt 16 door lid: heidij123
sort of...it's not necessarily "Body Builders". If you are lifting weights heavy with the goal of muscle gain, then yes, post workout carbs can aid in this process. Any other time of day I would avoid them.
