While at my gym class last Thursday I met a chap extolling the virtues of yoga, now that’s a subject I know nothing about. So when he said why not come along this Sunday to a free class at the community hall. I thought I’ll try anything once.

I skipped breakfast and just set myself up for the day with my version of a bullet proof coffee. It was an early start 08:45, well an early start for me after all it was Sunday. The class was quiet well attended there where 20 attendees. I was surprised to see the instructor was the chap who invited me to join the class.

Floor mats had been neatly laid out with enough spacing to avoid colliding with ones neighbour. The class began by adopting a cross legged position hands pointing skyward and exclaiming a long drawn out, “Ohmmm” some 20 times. I looked over at the instructor, who had his eyes open, but had rolled them to the back of his head, so I could only see the whites of his eyes. I remember thinking, was this meditation or the start of a séance.

The class continued with about 30 minutes of stretching exercises, but the last 30 mins got a bit surreal for me. I’m not sure if it was at the point where we adopted the frog on a lily pad posture, poked our tongues out and then were asked to shout “Yah!” as loud as we could about 10 times or was it the swinging our arms like an ape, then raising our arms to the heavens and laughing manically. Perhaps it was the exercise where we covered our eyes with three fingers while putting our thumbs in our ears and humming loudly for a couple of minutes.

At the end of the session I was told my Chi was now focused and my Karma and Chakra had been enhanced. I thanked the instructor and waved goodbye to the class. I thought although it was nice to be invited, perhaps I should try Tai Chi next.

That's so funny, Windle 😄! I went to a yoga class on holiday once and it was nothing like that. I think I would have walked out if it was - but good on you for sticking it out to the end - namaste 🙏🏻

Hmmm, an experience indeed! Nothing like my yoga classes (which I have been avoiding for a while). The one thing I know about yoga is that if you do an intense 10 minute workout every day you will notice a huge change in your shape after two weeks. You will also be more flexible (bending backwards you will start by only being able to see the top of the door and at the end of the two weeks you will be looking at the door knob) and any breathlessness you feel on exercising will have been considerably lessened. It's an astonishing exercise and I use Barbara Currie DVDs. Sorry, I will be using BC's DVDs again when I get off my backside and start doing yoga again!

Do you think it's possible and a reasonable idea to follow a yoga dvd at home without ever going to a class ? I did one yonks ago but have just a dvd at home (I'm sorting the cupboards out) 😂

I don't see why not. I'm not a huge class attender, I find I can't switch off the whooping moron at the front of the class like I can with a DVD :); I looked, but they didn't have a volume control . . .

OMG.....LOL! Your jounal entry was hilarious! I've got tears rolling down my face. I found Pilates to be a better fit for me than Yoga. I went to a couple of Yoga classes and didn't really care for it. @Linclass....why not? You can do a Yoga DVD at home, however, an instructor in a class can make sure you are doing the positions correctly and safe. I don't see any harm using a basic Yoga DVD at home; won't recommend anything advanced at home UNLESS you have been doing Yoga for a while.

I have tried it and now having read a little about advanced yoga. I have decided it's definitely not for me. Even the thought of putting my right ankle behind my right ear gives me nightmares. :P

I just do the bog-standard triangular warrior and downward dog stuff but it's good. Am determined to get back into it this weekend. You have inspired me!
