I am not surprised by this "gain." The bf and I were out all day yesterday and we decided to eat at P. F. Chang's. Neither of us had been there before (people seem to think this is weird) and we thought it would be fun. It was! I tried to make as healthy choices as I could and when I looked it up last night it turned out the calorie content wasn't too bad... but with all the salt and sugar and who-know-what-else that was in there I expected to see some water retention. Much like last weekend when I had a burger.

It seems that if we're honest with ourselves and really keep track of what we're doing, the body becomes a little less mysterious. We actually do know what we're doing right and what we could be doing better, but sometimes we don't want to admit it to ourselves.

That said, I'm kind of okay with splurging a little every once in a while. It may slow my weight loss down but it makes me feel less like a prisoner of my own diet. So far it's shaping up to be about once a week. How often do you guys eat out, and what do you do (if anything) to avoid straying too much from your diet when you do?

When I eat out, I almost always go over my limits for the day, but I agree with you totally on being OK with splurging once in a while. There is a difference between in and out of control splurging. So, as long it is of a controlled type, I see no real harm in it. There is also the concept of the free day about once a week, where you eat what you want; it is supposed to help in breaking plateaus and in keeping one's metabolism regular. Your chart clearly reflects how well you are doing, keep up the good work.

I second information, there is a difference between a treat you've planned and an out of control splurge. because of food allergy I don't eat out very often, but if I do then I try to stay within the limits, without feeling like a prisoner... for example I can allow myself a dessert, if I don't eat any other starchy food. if you are careful all week, there is no problem to have a little extra on the weekend. it's always a matter of balance!

Usually about once a week, and I try to time it on the day when I know I will be burning the most calories so it doesn't hurt me too bad. Because I'm a vegetarian I'm slightly restricted in what I can order in restaurants. Thankfully the vegetarian options at most places are also some of the more diet friendly meals.

I average my restaurant trips to about once a week, too. When I was living alone it was considerably less frequent, but now that my SO and I live together, we have fun eating out. It's easier to avoid eating out (and ordering in) now that I've left the East Coast, too. Since I can usually plan ahead or at least make educated guesses regarding calories and fat, the sodium is what does me in. I prefer salty and savory foods to sweet treats, which definitely doesn't help with the intake. Plus, sushi is one of my all-time favorite foods (it breaks my heart not to have multiple sushi bars in town anymore), but I really have to watch myself with the soy sauce. At least you had fun and know how to take the negatives in stride along with the positives. Like you told me, you can't put your life on hold just to eat right. :)
