Sodium! Why haven't I heard anything on these threads about sodium? I just read that we NEED to add sodium to our diets when we are low carb. When we first do low carb, we experience water loss (our big weight loss to start) because our kidneys switch from retaining salt to excreting it. Our body can make sodium from the potassium we have or take, but eventually it is not enough. Low sodium compromises your circulation, can cause lightheadedness, fatigue, muscle cramps, constipation, headaches...! According to The Art and Science of Low Carb Living, we should get around 5 grams of sodium. THose who eat processed foods get it easily, but not those of us who eat meat, eggs, cheese. I added up my normal intake, and it was only about 1 gram. They suggest drinking a couple cups of bouillon or broth a day. Thought I would pass this along! Hope it helps someone else!

I've just finished my first week on Atkins and it's working ! About 6 lbs. I've always had a tough time losing weight. Thanks for the sodium info. Your progress looks great !

My daughter was put on the protein sparing modified fast, (very low carb) and has been given a prescription for potassium and told to take supplements for calcium, vitamin D, magnesium and a mulit vitamin, she has been directed to use bouillon cubes as well. Otherwise your body can start shutting down. She does eat any process foods. Low carb diets can be very dangerous if you are not getting enough of the proper levels of sodium and potassium. The diet does not provide enough energy in the form of carbohydrate, so the body is forced to go into ketosis. This causes additional burden on the kidneys. There is not a lot of research available on the long-term effects of this.

From what I understand, tracking sodium is pointless AS LONG AS you eat a moderate to low amount of pre packaged processed foods AND you do not have a medical condition that requires sodium monitoring. If you don't have a medical condition and you eat well, sodium manages itself and it's ok to be over occasionally.
