Gnewfry's Logboek, 10 jun 14

i went to water aerobics. it wasn't very aerobic. the instructor wasn't moving along to the beat of the music, so that was frustrating. then she kept taking breaks, so i couldn't find the beat when she wasn't moving. it wasn't that enjoyable. but i felt good that i did it. the rest of the day went quickly.

my husband made us a great dinner again. he mixed salad greens with heirloom tomatoes, buffalo mozzarella and basil. i picked the basil. then he made a balsamic vinaigrette to go over the top with freshly ground black pepper and some sea salt. i was pretty hungry when he was putting that all together. actually, i had snacked on cashews before he went to the kitchen, i was that hungry. dinner didn't fill me up. salad never does, even with that cheese. i think fruit and veggies actually make me more hungry. i looked up the usda recommended ratio of carbs/fat/protein. there was a range. i looked it up on sparkpeople and they had simplified the range to 50/30/20 with at least 60 g of protein. i was definitely not eating enough fat. so after dinner i had two hard boiled eggs. that filled me right up. i was so happy i wasn't hungry! i felt like i had discovered something miraculous. just eggs. the perfect little snack.

Yes! You should always have protein with your salad. You can hard boil some eggs in advance and have them ready for your salads or you can cook some skinless boneless chicken breast in advance and cut it up to be ready for your salads. However the easiest option is to cut up some turkey, chicken or ham lunch meat and add that as a topping instead. Plus if you like cilantro, it's wonderful for adding some kick to an already delicious salad! These options will ensure that you aren't hungry after eating your salad. Good luck!

Eggs are the perfect snack! They are very healthy, and will fill you up and keep you satiated. I have at two every day for breakfast, fried with onions. I've made a list of things to have every day. So if I eat those healthy low caloric things, I won't be eating something else instead. It's really important to keep yourself satiated and the best way to do so is to eat whole foods. Then you won't have any more cravings. In fact, in my case, I find that even the hunger dissipates.

actually, heavenliemama, protein with my salad doesn't always help me. i had a huge portion of steak with my salad sunday night, and i was still starving. the eggs felt better, i think, because i ate them after i finished my salad yesterday. also, last night's salad had fresh mozzarella. maunikmtl, what else is on your list of things to eat every day? i'm looking forward to no cravings and the hunger disipating.

I've started a list. I watch Dr Oz and he often showcases the benefits of certain foods. So I try to get some of the foods he recommends. For now my every day list is 'eggs, 1 apple a day, 1 clove garlic (raw) everyday I have a salad.' it's a short list, but I'm building on it :) I was wondering if what you put in your salad (the vinaigrette) might be high in sugar (carbs). That could have made you still hungry after your meal.

Fats and proteins make you feel full. Carbs make people hungry and they end up craving more carbs. That's a fact! Eggs are perfect protein and fats that won't give you high cholesterol. High cholesterol generally comes from a combo of grains and sugars, so those refined, packaged foods can raise it.

maunikmtl, the vinaigrette was just balsamic vinegar and olive oil. it's really the fruits and veggies that make me hungry. very weird. bananas do fill me up though.

@Gnew / Last year I had balsamic vinegar with my salad every day. Then I looked at the bottle and saw that carb wise the balsamic vinegar was very high. I think they are not created equal. Now I use regular vinegar, and yesterday I poured regular vinegar into my balsamic vinegar (what was left of it) to cut the carbs.

I agree with the carbs making one hungrier. I do better on a lower carb diet.

maunikmtil, i just looked. the balsamic vinegar has 5 calories and 2 g carbs. i'm not going low carb, so i think that seems ok to me. that is for 1 tbsp. we don't use that much even. usually i don't put any dressing on my salad, but my husband loves to use the balsamic vinegar. and i love when i don't have to cook! thanks for commenting! i appreciate it.

With a salad to keep me satisfied I want something else with it or in it, yours had mozzarella so you had a protein. I would add whole cooked grains (red rice, farro, quinoa, barley ) or a couple tablespoons of cooked legumes maybe on the side with that carpressi salad . A salad and a piece of animal protein and I'm hungry in an hour. I don't do low carb but do control calories and mostly avoid processed foods.

Gnewfry, your husband can come cook for/with us ANY day ;-) My husband and I both love balsamic as well. I use it on a lot of things and often just use it straight as a salad dressing - particularly if I'm using a really good balsamic. Like you, I'm not striving for low carb. And with the balsamic, the flavor is SO intense that i find I don't use much at all. Congrats too for making it to water aerobics. Often, I don't really feel like I'm getting "exercise" per se - but I AM moving and keeping myself more flexible so I'm happy. Plus, splishing around in the water is very relaxing for me. Hope your next trip to the pool is enjoyable.

Hi Gnewfry, 2g carbs is nothing. Mine was much, much higher... Even if you don't go low carb, I know that sugar does raise cravings. That's why I was pointing it out, since you wrote that you were still hungry after a steak and salad. So enjoy!

Balsamic is great with tomatoes and basil.

I agree wholefoodnut. I also like just a couple drops on almost any grilled or roasted veggie.

vickie, i wish my husband would cook more often! it is usually me and i am much more boring. thanks maunikmtl!! wholefoodnut, i'm glad to hear that someone else is hungry after salad and animal protein. well, not glad for you but i'm glad someone understands. i think the whole grain or legume idea sounds great.

That was one of the reason's the low carb doesn't work well for me. The other two are that I always felt lie I had a little kids' ate too much candy stomach ache and I the taste from the keytosis made me nauseous. I have since found if I eat higher fat the stomach aches are back. Since I'm not much of a meat eater, a plan more plant based has worked well for me, 50+pounds lost, fs does not reflect my beginning wt of 192.

Your water aerobics instructor sounds like my former Weight Watchers leader who complained about the cold weather, described her potato casserole recipe, and read to us from a large paper flip chart. Her "get up and go" had "got up and went."

oh, i've had ww leaders like that. ugh. my last ones were actually much too perky. i like coming here better than i liked going to those meetings.
