So today I want to start a discussion because I am seeing a lot of 'drink more water' challenges. I have 2 questions for you to think about.

#1 Did your doctor tell you to drink more for a medical condition? There are a few cases where you do need more water to help ease medical side effects etc. Rarely but there are.

#2 Do you know the medical signs of dehydration? Seriously. Not just what you dimly remember that your Mom told you 30 years ago.

I actually was a crazy water nut and had all kinds of resulting issues that once I HALVED my water intake went away. Once my doctor realized how much I was drinking from my ever-ready water bottle he was amazed I never got sicker.

Some symptoms of water over hydration are insomnia, stress incontinence(ladies you know what I mean), cold extremities, headaches, peeing at night(once should be a rarity, twice is an issue).

Do some research from reputable sites(popsugar does NOT count). feel free to chime in if you have experiences that may help someone think about it.

I am glad you all chimed in. I think this is important and people need to think about it. Just like anything else too little OR too much of a good thing can be bad. And if it helps one person avoid the dangers of overhydration I am a happy camper.

Oh oh. I think I may be the over hydration person you describe. I drink about 12 8oz glasses of water daily. Lots of ladies room visits including at least twice at night. Some insomnia as well. I always have blamed it on the diuretic in my BP med, but I could be 'binging ' on water. Will research as you suggest. Thanks for the tip.

When I first started heading toward healthier choices, I started drinking a lot more water. After several months, I have evened out to what seems to be the amount that makes my body happy. Now, I have a sort of target in mind, but drink more or less, depending on my activity level and my thirst. Like hunger, I think we can fall out of touch with the cues of thirst.

I drink between 12 and 16 cups a day (6-8 bottles). I actually drank 10 the other day. BUT I walk 5 miles a day and I ride around in a hot car 12 hours a day. I don't suffer from any of the over hydration symptoms except having to pee lol. I usually pee twice in the night but I've done that my entire life. My mom says I was over-trained so if I wake up I have to go. I actually sleep better now than I did when I just drank caffeine free diet cokes. But I'm probably an anomaly. I've always dehydrated easily.

Hmm I notice I have been drinking about gallon a day... I don't force it but I drink when I am thirsty. I drink less at night but notice when I wake up I really have to pee. Not sure if I am over hydrating tho..

everything in moderation?

I had a thought with something that Xoh said. I think often we are told things by 'experts' because it's the way they were trained. When you're likely to get into a situation where you may get sued for giving wrong advice, the c.y.a. approved method is to do what everyone else is doing or to stick with how you were trained. Then you yourself can point and say 'Not me. I'm not responsible. It's a requirement according to..." Anyway. for me 90 ish ounces would be ridiculous, but if I was to do it, should that be 90 oz of water on top of the 60 oz of coffee/espresso I drink per day? :D

Funny this subject came up today. I went to the cardiologist yesterday and he told me to quit drinking all of the water because my electrolytes were depleted. I had been dieting (aren't we all?) and drinking extra water. Soon I had dizzy spells to the point I should not drive, heart palpitations, leg cramps, and the restless legs became much worse. Blood work revealed the electrolyte depletion. Also, I was restricting salt for my BP. Well, it's summer in Florida. It's hot. Salt is an electrolyte. It was depleted as well. Thanks for pointing this out to people that may not realize that you can become "water-logged" as my mother used to say years ago.

Hydration calculator - http://nutrition.about.com/library/blwatercalculator.htm My results: Your Hydration Calculator Results You need:

119.5 ounces or 3.6 liters About 20 percent of the water you consume is in the foods you eat. If you eat a balanced diet you can drink 95.6 ounces of water today, or 2.9 liters. Now this is based on my answers yours may vary and not everyone's needs are the same.

there is also a good article at the end of the question/calculator.

If electrolytes are at issue look into these but also consult your Dr. http://paleoedge.com/the-best-electrolyte-drinks-for-diabetes/ http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000KK5DWA/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B000KK5DWA&linkCode=as2&tag=swanhealcent-20

Pterath, I got: You need:

84 ounces or 2.5 liters About 20 percent of the water you consume is in the foods you eat. If you eat a balanced diet you can drink 67.2 ounces of water today, or 2 liters. So I am going to ask like you do, is that on top of the pot of coffee I drink daily? I have low blood pressure so no worries there. I only go to the bathroom once during the night, and most of the nights, because I have a bad habit of drinking water (and even coffee) right until I go to bed.

Coffee counts as well as soda and anything else liquid. Not necessarily the best nutrition choices but they count towards your fluid intake.

I was an athlete and was always told to pinch the skin above the first bone in your finger (closest to hand) if you are dehydrated it will stay stiff and raised, if you are hydrated it will spring back - drinking to much water is very taxing on your kidneys

Too much of anything is not good. Being healthy is all about MODERATION. Understand your individual body's physical NEEDS and LIMITS when it comes to exercise, nutrition, fluids, and rest. When you find that medium between the needs and limits, it is called BALANCE.
