Sherillynn's Logboek, 11 apr 17

Looking good to do another walk today. As I was finishing my walk yesterday, it started to sprinkle. Not a big deal since I was dressed for the occasion. All of the trees are starting to bud so the scenery doesn't look so bleak.

I am leaving to visit family on Thursday and will be gone for a week. I haven't seen my mom in a year. She has Alzheimers and while I am excited to see her, I am saddened to see the disease progression. How do people get through this type of pain?

Alzheimers is never the same day to day or hour to hour. Just roll with it. If your mom is lucid, stay and talk with her. Let her thoughts drive what you talk about. Tell her you love her. If she is not having a good day, do your best to provide comfort and understanding. My son said it best. Grandpa (my father) may not know who we are or know why we are there to visit. But if we leave him feeling better than we arrived, his brain will release "feel good" chemicals and so it is never a wasted visit. My father passed a year and a half ago and we treasured our last few years with him.

There are probably support groups in your area that would be helpful. I hope your visit goes well.

I found the book "The 36 Hour Day" very informative and helpful. You can get it from amazon - I highly recommend it for anyone with family dealing with alzheimers.
