I know I theoretically shouldn't be as upset about the gain as I am, but easier said than done. Granted, my son's birthday was on Saturday and while we went out for breakfast, we did on my birthday two weeks ago as well. We also did a nearly 4 mile hike this weekend so it's not like I was sitting around shoving cake down my throat all weekend.

Again, I know it's part of the process, but it's one of the harder parts. I've been hungry all morning and am not sure why. Luckily I planned ahead and had grapes, pretzels, and hummus to snack on. I want to really try to eat healthy this next week because my parents will be in town next weekend. I have to remind myself that part of this journey is balance. Enjoying yourself, not depriving yourself of food or experiences you enjoy. I'd rather eat a lighter meal or two so I can indulge at a restaurant than pick at broccoli and tofu while my guests eat steak and lasagna.

Notes to myself this week:

You're doing awesome! Keep up the good work, and remember the journey is going to have bumps along the way. The scale doesn't tell you the whole story, either. Keep going, girl. You got this.

Why is it so easy to be so hard on myself?

During my birthday week we went out for lunch ONE day; had takeout ONE night. I shared a huge piece of cake FOUR ways and a smaller piece with my son. I had two small alcoholic drinks, my first in months. All this over the course of an entire week. But here I am beating myself up for how irresponsibly I ate. (I felt so gross and bloated after that first piece of cake. It's been ages since I ate anything that rich and my body did not react well to it).

Mind you this is the same week I walked the furthest distances I have in years! We did 3 miles on Friday then turned around and walked 3.4 on Sunday. But here I am lamenting possible changes on the scale.

I questioned getting dressed and if my clothes were still going to fit ... like somehow eating a little bit more over the course of a few days was going to undo the last three months of effort; as if suddenly those 20ish pounds were going to magically reappear on my body.

I ate my usual yogurt and granola for breakfast today. That was easy. My boss brought in donuts; I don't want one. That's easy. Today's high is 70 degrees and we have a 2.5 mile walk planned - I'm looking forward to it. All this is easy.

The mental part ... that's the hard stuff.
