*sigh* It's been over a year since I've last signed into this website. The Plan diet was a lot of work, great food, but the variety resulted in too much stuff which I couldn't fit into my fridge. I just gave up. I sailed on, just doing my own thing and not giving a damn about my weight, my diet. I even quit my exercising, which I used to enjoy.
I had my gallbladder removed last year. I went into a depression, because I felt that maybe I'm going to spiral downhill with my health. I've always been healthy all my life, but everything seemed so hard now that I'm starting into my golden years. I didn't want to take anti-depressants. It was bad enough that I have to take pills for my hypothyroidism.
A month ago, I got a book called Wheat Belly, by William Davis MD. I was on a 14 day cruise but I had stepped on the scale before I left to go on the cruise. I was 256 lbs. The book was really far-fetched, I thought but the success stories just begged me to give it a shot. I decided to try to eat the way Dr. Davis explained -- going without wheat. It was only 14 days and I was sure I wouldn't stick to it. It is not easy to do because I was eating morning yogurt, thinking I was being wheatless. Then one day, decided to read the label and found it has wheat in it!! So I just ate eggs and bacon for breakfast. Something I never do because I thought they only make me gain. But Dr. Davis insisted that they are good food.
I did have a mild headache for a couple of days. I'm not prone to headaches, but the book said there will be withdrawal symptoms that can last a week or longer. I wondered if it was because of all those eggs and bacon I was having in the morning. But then the headaches went away, and I was still eating eggs and bacon. So maybe the book is right. A WHEAT withdrawal....? Gee.
After 7 days, I realized that I wasn't hurting in my joints (I have arthritis in my right shoulder and hip). Climbing the stairs usually is painful. Not anymore! I re-read the book again, much more interested and now determined to give this Wheat Belly idea a good attempt.
Every day I still had a small bowl of ice cream. It probably had wheat in it, there was no label to look at. But I thought "I'm not eating it in a cone, so it's a little better...". Then on the 10th day of the cruise, I broke down and had my ice cream in a waffle cone. Within the hour, my intestine was not happy. I could feel discomfort and wondered if I was going to have bad night. It was over in a few hours, but I suddenly am fascinated with this wheat theory.
My cruise meals were all attempts to stay away from wheat, potatoes, sauces. I sometimes went for seconds because the food was so good even though I didn't have "good" poisons on it. Near the end of the cruise, I really was seeing wheat as a poison. My depression was lifting, my body wasn't hurting anymore and something was happening that made me determined to pursue this lifestyle when I got home.
On day 14, when we got home, I weighed myself again, expecting to see a gain because I had ice cream every day and second helpings, and sometimes I ate 5 times a day. I may or may not have had some wheat in my foods, but I didn't eat any breads, cakes, muffins, sauces, gravies, breaded foods, or cookies (I did eat macaroons and meringue cookies). I was 256, the same weight I was before I went on the cruise.
By now, I could take the stairs from Deck 1 to Deck 9 without pulling myself up on the rail. I felt like I did when I was 40, no pain at all. And although I was huffing and puffing by the time I reached Deck 5, my heart did not hurt like it usually does when I overexert myself. Something was definitely changing within my body! And I liked it.
So starting on day 15, I went on a big shopping spree for wheatless flours, and bought lots of eggs. I cook wheatless now. The recipes in the Wheat Belly Cookbook are fantastic -- except for the spirataki noodles. I prefer Spaghetti noodles.
Today, it's day 28 since I first started reading Wheat Belly. I stepped on the scale this morning and realized that I've lost 8 lbs.
I have no cravings, I sometimes forget to eat because I'm rarely hungry. Lately, with this heat, I've only been eating two meals a day, and I'm never hungry at bedtime. Today's lunch was just a small handful of raw cashews, and that kept me going for another 3 hours before I had a thought that maybe I should make some supper for the family.
So I'm changing my lifestyle and going wheatless! Thank you Dr. Davis!! You saved my sanity and my life.

We went out for Mongolian BBQ for Valentines supper yesterday. Hubby got me a 14 gram Lindt chocolate heart, which I ate for desert. I did not exercise, other than just walking around. Lost a half a pound, which surprised me!

I removed one of the challenges from my list for two reasons.
The first reason is because the carb count was supposed to be 60 grams or less. Over 3 days, my carbs were over 100 and yesterday's count was 205. So obviously 60 is not a possibility AT ALL, with my way of eating.
The second reason is because they aim to lose 15 Kg in 10 weeks. When I joined, I thought it was 15 LBS, not Kg. Senior moment with my reading skills. That works out to 3.3 lbs. a week and I don't want to lose my weight that fast. I've learned that losing weight fast is detrimental to my moments with my scale in the future.
So out goes that challenge.
