My husband is watching a program on TV dealing with statistics. It was talking about the obesity rate in America. They happened to mention that the average American eats 110# of potatoes per year! I have decided that my goal for the year is to eat no potatoes at all. Carbs are so appealing to me. My love affair with them has been going on forever. Clearly, everything we love isn't good for us. While I can't blame my entire weight problem on carbs, I believe it is a good deal of my problem.
My plan is to tackle my vices one at a time so I am not completely overwhelmed. Too many changes and new rules all at once will make my head spin.
Anyone else have any advice on how to rid myself of those awful vices? What works for you? What doesn't?

One of my friends on here calls herself a "potato whore" LOL and I have to say that's me, too. I love, love, love potatoes. Doesn't matter how they come, mashed, baked, fried, chips.. I love them. When I stopped eating them, the craving for them went away. Many high carb, starchy foods will make your body crave more. I also found a nice alternative to potatoes in cauliflower. Now granted, cauliflower doesn't taste exactly like potatoes, but the texture is pretty close and it tastes so good with butter and cheese. (I see where you had cauliflower lasagna today! Sounds awesome!) Getting to the point where you don't want potatoes anymore is really just a mind game, basically. Your brain and your body will say, "Hey! Potatoes! I want those! Gimme, Gimme!" LOL, but you have to be in control of your brain and just say, "Nope. Not gonna eat them." It takes a little while, but it can be done :)

I found that rather than saying "no carbs" and feeling like you are starving yourself... I do it one thing at a time. No bread this week. Next week, no bread and no potatoes, etc. Sometimes it takes me two weeks to not crave something anymore. Doing it that way, I am still losing weight, but I feel like I get to wean myself off the "naughty foods" and still lose weight.

I wish I had an answer for that one! I am a carb fanatic and I love sweets.. How I have managed at the beginning was just cold turkey and yes I was tortured (mentally) but I do not crave breads, rice, potatoes and I used too.. I still crave sweets (cakes, pies etc etc) Ive been really hard on myself and didn't cave in to sweets until Thanksgiving and a few bites for Christmas.. I still crave them but "my buddies" on this site have introduced me to sugar free now.. I say all that to say that I believe everyone is different and you have to do what is right for you.. However you do it - here's to your new healthy beginning! Good luck!

Thanks to everyone for sharing their thoughts and aadvice. @BBD5- you are right- each of us is different and we must do what is right for us. I am trying to tackle one thing at a time. I think my biggest carb crave is fresh homemade bread! The sweets crave hits me at odd times. There are lots of sweets in the house but they usually don't tempt me. (Knock on wood!) Isn't it interesting the varieties of cravings or guilty pleasures people have related to food? The one thing sweet I forgot to mention that stalks me is coffee drinks! Caribou Coffee is like the Den of Sin for me. There is one across from where I work so I must be really careful NOT to look out the window when I am on break!

The key is being able to look out the window at Caribou Coffee and choosing not to go inside :)

What a wonderful thread to come across - like an AA meeting for sugarholics! Hi, My name is Elizabeth and I'm a sugarholic. My big thing is Cake and Cookies. I do love bread though. I am retraining my brain to see those things and instead of thinking , oh I want/can't have, I think of Mom and the last six years of her life suffering horribly from diabetic neuropathy/polymyalgia rheumatic - a diabetic complication. So I think of how she was on insulin for 15 years and still unable to say no to the cakes and cookies - "oh, just one...two..." I tell myself, when I see them, Yes I crave them, but I choose health.
